Presented here is the essential Johnny Cash fifteenth album Blood Sweat and Tears recorded in four sessions during the summer of 1962 and released by Columbia early the following year. Where Ride This Train (1960) was about railroads and how they shaped America Blood Sweat and Tears is about the story of the American working man. It contains classic ballads like “Casey Jones” and “The Legend of John Henry’s Hammer” as well as the blues tune “Busted” and the worker’s lament “Tell Him I’m Gone.” The delivery is plain simple and direct. The album consists almost entirely of top-notch material without the oversentimentality or history lessons that weigh down most of Johnny Cash’s Americana records.
This quintessential reissue has been remastered and packaged in a very special collector’s edition which also includes 3 bonus tracks from the same sessions: “(There’ll Be) Peace in the Valley (For Me)” and “Send a Picture of Mother” (B-side of “Busted” single) both from the session that involved The Carter Family and the field song “Pick a Bale O’ Cotton” from another 1962 hard to find single.
